Winston WT 8′ 6″, 4wt build

The dry fly setup

Components used for this build:

  • Blank: Winston WT Trout
  • Length: 8’6″
  • Aftma: #4
  • Sections: 3 pcs
  • Color: Winston green
  • Action: medium
  • Reel seat: Bellinger ULTB660N
  • Spacer: black ash burl
  • Guides: Hopkins and Holloway snakes & Fuji CLNSG striping guide
  • Thread: Gudebrod dark green 5896

This medium action rod bends progressively into the handle when fighting big fish, i use this rod for trout and grayling fishing on small to medium size water. After some testing of different lines i was pretty happy with the Lee Wulff TT in 4 weight. The Winston WT (stands for »Winston Trout« or »Winston Traditional«) series is not picky to line up but you have to make sure you do not over line it. You will loose the fine presentation and smooth casting stroke skills of this rod if you do. I prefer to fish this rod with leaders up to 10 foot including the tip if you go for longer leaders it is not easy to straighten them up. This rod is one of my favorite rods to fish the dry fly on medium casting range.
